Our Green Committee members held their Second Annual Internal Recycled Materials contest and the winner was announced at our July Plant Meeting. The contest challenge was to create something artful or useful out of recycled
materials. All entries were judged on creativity, difficulty, and the number of recycled materials used.
Our very own Jose Serna won first prize with his recreation of The Kelpies. The original Kelpie horse head structures
are Entry made from recycled pallets located near the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland. They stand at 100 feet tall and each weighs approximately 300 tons. The Kelpies are a monument to the horse powered heritage across Scotland.
Jose’s inspired replica of The Kelpies stand about three feet tall. They were created out of wire hangers for the frame and recycled wood and rubber for the base. Aluminum plates were recycled and cut into various patterns to recreate the stainless steel cladding of the original Kelpie sculptures.
Like the real thing, Jose’s Kelpie figures are a monument to Thoro Packaging and our founder’s love of thoroughbred horses.
Congratulations Jose! The Thoro team admires your ingenuity and we look forward to seeing your creation next year.
