July is finally here! It goes without saying that July is one of the hottest months of the year. We are so happy summer is finally here, and to celebrate, Thoro Packaging asked our employees to share with us their most memorable 4th of July Memory. Entries were judged by both content and creativity. The winning prize for the contest was a 36” motorized, remote control boat, perfect for the lake.

Congratulations to Andrea Percy from our Marketing department who was our big winner this year with the following entry…

My best 4th of July memory is not all rainbows and butterflies, but what occurred as a result of the events was a positive change. I was 10 years old and my mom’s whole family gathered at Yucaipa Regional Park to celebrate our independence with a day of picnicking, fishing, sports and family time. We set up camp early to spend the whole day playing, and planned to stay for the fireworks show that evening. I was having a blast enjoying the sun, playing with my cousins, and enjoying the freedom.

Once dusk hit the fun stopped. The people set up next to us had decided to attempt their own fireworks show and the park immediately burst into flames. The family gathered quickly and ran to our cars, exiting the park as fast as we could, leaving everything behind. Once we had gathered away from the park we realized that along with everything else, my uncle’s blind dog had been left behind, tied to the tree. The adults were so focused on keeping us kids safe, the dog had been forgotten. Luckily, a couple days later my uncle got his dog back. Someone nearby untied the dog and took him home. I was thankful that my entire family, and the dog, all made it out safely.

You may wonder why this is my favorite 4th of July memory… despite the scary events that occurred, we had a wonderful day with family enjoying the freedoms our country offers us. These events made me appreciate my time with family even more than I already did, and taught me that the freedom we have should not be taken advantage of. We learned a valuable lesson that day, “Leave the fireworks to the professionals.” I am thankful for our country, our freedom and for the men and women who risk their lives to protect us. I thank the firefighters that fought that blaze that night. I thank my uncle who is a veteran, and two of my cousins that were there that day, who have gone on to serve and protect our country in the US Army. God Bless America! Enjoy the 4th of July and celebrate your independence safely!

We would like to give a big thank you to all who submitted an entry and for sharing your memories with us.
Congratulations to Andrea, we hope you enjoy your new RC boat out on Big Bear Lake!

In observance of Independence Day, Thoro Packaging will be closed on Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th.
